Outlook Express: How do I set up an additional mailbox?

Before you start: Is this the first mailbox for Outlook Express?

Make sure you have Outlook Express installed and your main e-mail account already set up. Then, to add another mailbox to Outlook Express, follow these four major steps:

Step 1: Create a new mailbox identity in Outlook Express.

1. Open Outlook Express if it is not already open.
.
2. Click File, then Identities, and select Add New Identity from the menu to open the New Identity dialog box.

Note:

Outlook Express uses "identities" to keep multiple users' inboxes and settings separate from one another. If you add an additional mailbox to Outlook Express without creating a new identity, all e-mail for the new mailbox will be received in the same inbox.

3. Enter a name for the identity. This can be any name you want for identification purposes within Outlook Express, and it does not have any effect on sending or receiving e-mail.

4. Check the Require a password checkbox if you want to restrict access to this identity. If you check the Require a password checkbox, Outlook Express will prompt you to enter and confirm a password for this identity.

5. When the Identity Added dialog box opens, click Yes to switch to the new identity.

Outlook Express will restart and open for the new identity.

You may be prompted to decide if you want Outlook Express to be your default mail client. The message (shown below) will appear if Outlook Express detects other e-mail software installed on your computer:

6. Select Yes or No depending on your preferences.

7. Now that Outlook Express is open for the new identity, you may see the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box. Click Cancel to close the Internet Connection Wizard dialog box without making additional changes.

When you are asked if you are sure you want to exit the Wizard, click Yes.

If any other wizards or dialog boxes prompt you for information, click Cancel to exit them.

Step 2: Add the new mailbox to the new identity.

These instructions show you how to add a mailbox to the currently active identity in Outlook
Express. This step attaches your mail server mailbox information to the current identity so you can send and receive e-mail through the appropriate Inbox in Outlook Express.

1. Open Outlook Express if it is not already open.

2. Click Tools, and select Accounts from the menu to open the Internet Accounts dialog box.

3. Select the Mail tab

4. Click Add.

5. Select Mail from the menu.

6. In the field titled Display Name, enter your name as you would like it to appear in the From field of each e-mail you send.

7. Click the Next button.

8. Select I already have an e-mail address that I'd like to use.

9. Enter your e-mail address.

10. Click Next.

11. Click the down arrow to display the drop-down box. Select POP3.

12. In the Incoming mail server field, enter smtp.[your domain name] Example: smtp.systel.net

13. In the Outgoing mail server field, enter smtp.[your domain name] Example: smtp.systel.net

14. Click the Next button.

15. Enter your account name. Your account name is your entire e-mail address.

16. Enter your email password in the next field. You will not see your password as you type. Asterisks (*) will appear for each character entered to keep the password hidden.

17. Make sure the Logon using Secure Password Authentication is not selected.

18. Click Next.

19. Click Finish to save your account settings.

Repeat this process to set up additional accounts.

Step 3: Open your new mailbox in Outlook Express.

If you have set up multiple identities in Outlook Express to manage more than one mailbox, you can switch back and forth between each identity.

1. Open Outlook Express if it is not already open.

2. Click File, and select Switch Identity from the menu to open the Switch Identities dialog box.

3. Double-click the desired identity in the list of names.

Outlook Express then opens that identity so that you can send and receive e-mail through the mailbox for that identity.
